What Is a Milestone?

Getting Started

A milestone is a major stage inside a journey that marks real progress. Each milestone contains steps — the individual actions members complete. When all steps in a milestone are done, the milestone is complete.

Milestones are the chapters of a journey. They break a large program into meaningful phases so members can see where they are, how far they've come, and what's next. Each milestone contains one or more steps.

How milestones work for members

When a member opens a journey, they see a list of milestones representing the major stages. They open a milestone to see its steps, then work through them. As they complete steps, the milestone's progress updates. Once every step in a milestone is done, the milestone is marked complete and the member moves on.

Milestone settings

Each milestone has a settings page with several sections:

  • Content — the milestone's name and description.
  • Customize — background colors, gradients, and images for this milestone.
  • Visibility Rules — conditions that control when this milestone appears to a member.
  • Versions — an optional feature that lets members create and manage multiple versions of this milestone. See Understanding Milestone Versions for details.

Background inheritance

Milestones inherit their background from the journey above them by default. If the journey doesn't set a custom background, the hub's background is used. You can override this per milestone under Settings → Customize. Steps inside a milestone automatically use the milestone's background.

Customizable labels

"Milestones" is just the default label. In your hub settings, you can rename them to Phases, Modules, Sections, or anything that fits your program.

Frequently asked questions

How many milestones can a journey have?
There's no hard limit, but most programs work best with 2 to 5 milestones per journey — enough to show meaningful progress without overwhelming members.
Can I reorder milestones?
Yes. From the journey page, you can drag milestones into any order.
What happens when a member finishes all the steps in a milestone?
The milestone is marked complete. Members can see their progress and move on to the next milestone in the journey.
Can I hide a milestone until a member reaches a certain point?
Yes. Use visibility rules on the milestone to control when it appears — based on dates, completed steps, user tags, or other conditions.
