Understand and Resolve Step Context Warnings

Building Your Hub

OBIE flags Step links that rely on information users may not have completed yet. Keep needed links and fix the order, or unlink sources you no longer need; unlinking takes effect for users right away.

OBIE flags Step links that point to information users may not have completed yet. You can fix the order while keeping the link, or unlink a source your Step no longer needs. Reordering doesn't remove links automatically.

Review and resolve a warning

1. Open your AI Hub, Journey, or Milestone and look for Step context out of order or Check context availability.

2. Select Show details if the warning isn't already expanded. Read the affected Step and the source Step listed underneath it. A source marked (required) must be completed before users can start the affected Step.

3. Select View linked step to inspect that link in the affected Step's Context settings, or its Deliverable settings when the link supplies a Deliverable.

4. If the link is still needed, reorder the content so users complete the source Step first. For a link within the same Journey, place the source earlier or the affected Step later.

5. If the link isn't needed, select Unlink step from context or Unlink step from deliverable. Review the confirmation before selecting Unlink. Select Cancel to keep the link.

6. Check the list again. The warning for that link should disappear after you've corrected the order or removed the link. Other unresolved links may still be listed.

What the two notices mean

Step context out of order means a Step uses a source that comes later in the same Journey. In the screenshot, the thesis-drafting Step has been placed before the orientation Step it requires. Putting the orientation Step back first resolves the warning without removing its context.

Check context availability is a review notice for a source in another Journey that appears later in the hub's sequence. It doesn't automatically mean the link is wrong. Make sure users complete that source Journey first, or remove the link if the information isn't needed.

Cross-Journey links already enforced by a required link or a matching completion visibility rule don't appear in that availability notice. A Journey's display order alone doesn't guarantee that users complete it first.

You may see these notices on the hub dashboard, Journey and Milestone pages, the Journeys list, and in Canvas View. Affected Step cards also carry a context notice. If you've renamed Journeys, Milestones, or Steps in your hub, the labels use your names.

Understand what Unlink changes

For a context link, Unlink stops the affected Step from using the source Step's information. For a Deliverable link, it stops the Deliverable from including that source's answers.

This goes live for users right away. Other unpublished edits on the affected Step stay unpublished. If the source is marked (required), unlinking also removes that linked completion requirement, so users can start the affected Step without finishing that source.

Review both Step names and the immediate effect before confirming Unlink.

Only unlink a source when you intentionally want to remove it. If the Step still needs that information, fixing the order is the better choice. The confirmation names both Steps so you can check exactly what you're changing.

Check the user experience

After resolving the warning, confirm the source appears before the Step that needs it. Then use Preview as User to check the intended path and any remaining prerequisites or visibility rules.

For the mechanics of changing sequence, see Reorder Journeys, Milestones, and Steps. To change an item's parent, see Move or Copy Journeys, Milestones, and Steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does a warning mean OBIE changed or removed my context?
No. Moving or reordering content within the same AI Hub keeps its links. The warning asks you to review a link whose source comes later; it doesn't remove the link or unblock a required Step.
Why is the warning count larger than the number of affected Steps?
The count is the number of flagged links, not necessarily the number of unique Steps. One Step can rely on several later sources, including links used by a Deliverable.
Does every link to another Journey create an availability notice?
No. The notice applies when the source appears later in the hub's sequence and its completion isn't already enforced by a required link or a matching completion visibility rule.
Do I need to publish pending edits after selecting Unlink?
No. Unlinking goes live for users right away. Other unpublished edits on the affected Step stay unpublished, so review the confirmation carefully.
