Tags Applied on Opt-in or Purchase
Offers apply tags when users opt in, buy, or subscribe, using the current link if the tags field is empty. New offers save their link as a tag, later link changes don't update saved tags, and tags remain after an offer ends; use Active Offer for ongoing access.
Every offer adds one or more tags to a user when they opt in, buy, or subscribe. You set them in the offer's General drawer, and if you leave the field empty, the offer link itself is used as the tag. Tags stay on the user afterward, so they're best for segmenting and history, not for access that should end.
Set an offer's tags
1. Open your hub, select Offers, then select the offer or Edit.
2. Go to the Product tab and open General.
3. Add tags in the tags field and select Save. The label changes with the offer type: Tags applied on opt-in for free offers, Tags applied on purchase for one-time and payment plan offers, and Tags applied on subscription for subscriptions.
Tags are saved in lowercase. A new offer starts with its link saved as a tag. Changing the public link later doesn't change that saved tag, so check the tags separately after a rename. If you clear the field entirely, OBIE uses the current offer link as the fallback.
When tags are added
On a free offer, tags are added when someone completes the sign-up form. On a paid offer, they're added when Stripe confirms the checkout. New tags are merged with any tags the user already has, nothing gets replaced.
Giving someone a free pass to an offer doesn't add the offer's tags. The pass gives them the offer itself, which is what Active Offer rules check.
Tags vs. Active Offer
Visibility rules can use tags to unlock hubs, journeys, and other content. That works well for free opt-ins, segments, and content that should stay open once someone has joined.
Tags don't come off when a subscription ends or a purchase is refunded. If you build a rule on an offer's tag, someone who cancels or gets a refund keeps matching it. The visibility rules editor warns you about this when a tag you use comes from an offer: "Use an Active Offer requirement or assign the content to an offer when access should end after a cancellation or refund."
So when access should follow whether someone currently has the offer, use one of these instead:
- An Active Offer rule, which checks "They currently have access through a selected offer".
- Included journeys in the offer's General drawer, which adds the offer to a journey's Active Offer rule for you. See Choose which journeys a paid offer unlocks.
An example
Walsh Consulting Group runs a free "Team Health Check" opt-in and a paid "Leadership Lab" subscription. The free offer tags users with team-health-check, which unlocks a bonus conversation that should stay open for good. The paid journeys use Active Offer for Leadership Lab, so they close if a subscription ends.

Frequently asked questions
- Are tags removed when someone cancels or gets a refund?
- No. Tags stay on the user. If access should end when the offer ends, use an Active Offer rule or the offer's Included journeys instead of a tag rule.
- Does a free pass add the offer's tags?
- No. A free pass gives the user the offer itself, which Active Offer rules check, but it doesn't add tags.
- What tag is used if I leave the field empty?
- An empty tags field falls back to the current offer link. A new offer initially saves its link as a tag, though, and changing the public link later doesn't update that saved tag. Check the tags field separately after a link change.

Offer access follows subscription, purchase, payment-plan, and pass status; full refunds can end it, but partial refunds don't. Losing the offer stops matching its Active Offer requirement, while other access can remain; revoking a sole pass can also end hub access.

Visibility rules hide content until a user meets the conditions you set. Rules can use progress, answers, dates and times, time on the platform, tags, or active offers, and date-based rules can follow the hub time zone or each user's local time.
