How Visibility Rules Work
Visibility rules let you control when a journey, milestone, step, or conversation appears to a member. You can show or hide content based on dates, completed steps, answered questions, user tags, active offers, and time on the platform. The system works identically everywhere it appears.
Visibility rules give you fine-grained control over what members see and when. Instead of showing everything at once, you can reveal content as members progress, reach a date, carry specific tags, or meet other conditions.
Where visibility rules appear
Visibility rules are available on four entity types, and they work identically in each place:
- Journeys — Settings → Visibility Rules
- Milestones — Settings → Visibility Rules
- Steps — in the step editor under Visibility Rules
- Conversations — Conversation template Settings → Visibility Rules
The condition types, the editor, and the behavior are the same everywhere. Learn it once and it works across your entire hub.
Condition types
You can build rules from eight types of conditions:
- Finished a Step — the member has completed a specific step in your hub.
- Answered a Question — the member has submitted an answer on a specific step.
- Choose a Specific Answer — the member picked a particular multiple-choice option on a step.
- On or After a Date — content unlocks starting on a calendar day you choose.
- Before a Date — content is hidden after a calendar day (useful for limited-time content).
- Time on Platform — the member's account has been active for a certain number of days or hours.
- User Tags — the member has (or doesn't have) specific tags on their account. You can require all tags, any tags, or exclude tags.
- Active Offer — the member currently has access through one of the offers you select.
Combining conditions
You can combine multiple conditions using AND (all conditions must be true) or OR (any condition can be true). You can also nest groups to build more complex logic — for example, "completed Step A AND (has Tag X OR has Tag Y)."
No rules = always visible
If you don't add any visibility rules to a journey, milestone, step, or conversation, it's visible to all members at all times (as long as the journey is published). Visibility rules are entirely optional — add them only when you need to gate access.
Preview your rules
The visibility rules editor includes a Preview button so you can see how the rules behave before saving. Use it to verify that the conditions work as expected.
Frequently asked questions
- Do visibility rules work the same on every entity type?
- Yes. The condition types, the editor, and the behavior are identical whether you're setting rules on a journey, milestone, step, or conversation.
- What happens if a member doesn't meet the conditions?
- The item is hidden from them completely — they won't see it in their journey, milestone list, step list, or conversation list until the conditions are met.
- Can I use visibility rules to drip content over time?
- Yes. Use the "On or After a Date" condition to unlock content on specific dates, or the "Time on Platform" condition to reveal content after a member has been active for a set number of days.
- Can I gate content based on which offer a member purchased?
- Yes. The "Active Offer" condition lets you show content only to members who have access through a specific offer. This is useful for tiered programs.
