What Is a Step?
A step is an individual action inside a milestone — something for a member to read, answer, or work through with the AI. Steps are where the actual learning and doing happens in your hub.
Steps are the building blocks of your program. Every milestone is made up of steps, and each step gives a member something specific to do — read content, answer questions, or work through an AI-guided session.
What a step looks like to members
When a member opens a milestone, they see a list of steps. They work through each one, and as they complete steps, the milestone's progress bar fills up. A step is complete once the member has answered its questions or finished its content.
What goes into a step
When you create or edit a step as a creator, you configure:
- Name — what the member sees in the step list.
- Prompt — instructions to the AI that shape how it guides the member through this step. This is where you describe what the step should accomplish and how the AI should approach it.
- Questions — one or more questions the member answers. Questions can be open-ended text, multiple choice, or other input types.
- Visibility Rules — conditions that control when this step appears to a member.
Step types
Most steps are AI-guided — the member answers questions and the AI provides personalized feedback, suggestions, or working material based on your prompts and documents.
There's also a Fixed Guidance step type, where you write the response yourself instead of letting the AI generate it. Members see your exact text — they can copy it or use AI to enhance it, but they can't rewrite your core content. Use this for prescriptive or compliance-sensitive content.
The AI's role in steps
When a member works through a step, the AI doesn't just accept answers — it engages. Based on the prompt you wrote and the documents uploaded to your hub, the AI can ask follow-up questions, provide personalized feedback, suggest frameworks, or guide the member through a working session. You can also use Enhance My Prompt to refine your step's prompt with the help of AI, optionally referencing your uploaded documents for context.
Customizable labels
"Steps" is just the default label. In your hub settings, you can rename them to Actions, Tasks, Exercises, Lessons, or anything that fits your program.

- Can a step have more than one question?
- Yes. You can add multiple questions to a single step — each one appears in sequence for the member to answer.
- What question types are available?
- Steps support open-ended text responses and multiple-choice questions. The AI responds to the member's answers based on your prompt and uploaded documents.
- What's the difference between a step and a conversation?
- A step has a defined finish line — the member answers its questions and completes it. A conversation is open-ended: the member can return to it anytime to think something through with the AI.
- Can I control when a step appears?
- Yes. Use visibility rules on the step to show or hide it based on dates, completed steps, user tags, specific answers to other questions, or other conditions.
